Garden furniture

Always somewhere to sit, to rest, to look, to watch, to contemplate, to imagine…

Bamboo jungle inspiration…

Traveller’s rest.
These hammocks were hand-made from fishing nets in Sète by Antoine ‘Nanou’ and swinging in them,
I can reminisce about the ten years I lived aboard my 1939 herring boat, ‘Grumpy’.

Imagining…
From the perspective of this old grey Lutyens bench came the inspiration for the second pond.
The first pond is just in front of the second Lutyens bench, a little higher up the slope (Photo from March, 2020).

This pair of wrought iron benches in the clearing affords a tranquil moment in early spring.

View to the East, the valley of the Fieffes, and the woods beyond.

The old grey ‘Lutyens’ bench is now in the workshop, awaiting renovation, and is currently replaced by this ‘Drachmann’ bench.
Inspired by the Danish poet and painter Holger Henrik Herholdt Drachmann (1846–1908), a leading figure of Danish Romanticism,
whose house and garden in Skagen have become an iconic site, the original bench comes from the house of Danish cabinet maker, Fritz Hansen.

In my treasure-hunting trails, I came across these two curious stools hand-made from old tractor seats.
I felt I had to give them a coat of « tractor red » paint, with a little ‘toadstool’ touch, in keeping with their woodland setting!

I’m often surprised how otherwise ugly, contemporary designs and materials can be mellowed and tamed when placed in a rustic, wild garden.
These two plastic armchairs have settled into place beside one of the ponds,
providing some comfort while watching the newts, frogs, and dragonflies during long, peaceful moments.
